Product Overview
Velvet Wall Paint is a premium mineral silicate paint with exceptional hiding and productivity. A water-based silicate binder carries only mineral fillers and pigments, producing a unique crystalline finish that adds depth and dimension to interior walls and ceilings — and is particularly suited to rooms where critical, raking light is present.
All-natural ingredients deliver a paint with no odor and no measurable VOCs, so occupied rooms can be painted without disruption. High vapor permeability allows walls to remain drier for healthier indoor environments. Velvet Wall Paint is hygienic and will not support the growth of mold or mildew. It will not burn, is a Class A building material, and in case of fire contributes neither fuel nor noxious smoke.
The Finish
Matte flat, with a unique crystalline quality that adds depth and dimension to walls and ceilings. The silicate binder produces a luminous, high-reflectance white and intense, lightfast color shades with a unique depth of color. The finish is optimized for walls with glancing light.

Suitable Substrates
Velvet Wall Paint is ideal for residential, commercial, and historic interiors where fast production and luminous color are desired. Use on new or previously painted interior walls and ceilings.
- Drywall and wallboard (new drywall requires a blocking / sealing primer)
- Plaster
- Concrete, cast or pre-cast
- Brick and masonry
- Stucco
- CMU block
- Previously latex- or acrylic-painted surfaces
- Historic and delicate interior surfaces
Not suitable for
Surfaces saturated with salts or where efflorescence is present. Glossy enamels and varnished surfaces. Plastic. New wood. Floors. Exterior surfaces.
Contact JH before specifying
For any substrate not listed above, contact JH for recommendations on preparation and system build-up.
Systems
For maximum durability on bare and not previously coated surfaces, apply two coats of Velvet Wall Paint at the recommended coverage rate. The surface should be fully coated, with no pinholes, runs, or holidays.
| Substrate | System |
|---|---|
| New drywall or wallboard | Prime with a quality blocking / sealing primer to ensure even porosity, then 2 coats Velvet Wall Paint |
| New plaster | 1–2 coats Velvet Wall Paint |
| Previously latex or acrylic painted | 1–2 coats Velvet Wall Paint |
| Bare, not previously coated | 2 coats Velvet Wall Paint at recommended coverage rates |
Coverage
| Substrate | Per coat | Two coats |
|---|---|---|
| Drywall and wallboard | 300–350 sq ft / gal | 150–175 sq ft / gal |
| Cast or pre-cast concrete | 275–325 sq ft / gal | 138–163 sq ft / gal |
| Brick or stone masonry | 175–225 sq ft / gal | 88–113 sq ft / gal |
| Plaster and stucco | 150–200 sq ft / gal | 75–100 sq ft / gal |
| CMU block, smooth | 100–150 sq ft / gal | 50–75 sq ft / gal |
Stated values are based on our experience on smooth surfaces. Surface texture, porosity, application conditions, and type of equipment used will all vary consumption. Only a test application, using the desired mixing ratio and under production conditions, will forecast consumption of the system components accurately.
Surface Preparation
Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping, or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children and pregnant women.
Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator, and proper containment and cleanup. For more information call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD, or contact your local health authority.
Remove all surface contamination by washing with an appropriate cleaner, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry. Existing peeling or checked paint should be scraped and sanded to a sound surface. Glossy surfaces should be sanded dull. Stains from water, smoke, ink, pencil, or grease should be sealed with the appropriate acrylic primer / sealer.
Protect surfaces not to be painted — glass, natural stone, ceramics, and floors. Any splashes must be cleaned up with soap and water before they dry or become permanent.
Drywall
Fill cracks and holes with patching paste or spackle and sand smooth. Joint compounds must be cured and sanded smooth. Remove all sanding dust. Prime with a quality blocking / sealing primer so that porosity is even across the wall.
Masonry, concrete, cement, block
All new surfaces must be cured according to the supplier's recommendations — usually about 28 days. Remove all form release and curing agents. Rough surfaces can be filled to provide a smooth surface.
Mixing
Mix Velvet Wall Paint completely with a low-speed drill and paddle attachment until homogeneous, with no streaks of color.
Box mixed colors together before application. Boxing maintains color consistency from pail to pail across large surfaces.
Application
Velvet Wall Paint may be applied by brush, roller, or airless spray. Apply at temperatures between 50°F and 86°F.
First coat
Velvet Wall Paint is typically applied undiluted, but may be diluted up to 10% with water if desired. Allow 4–6 hours before recoating.
Topcoat
Apply Velvet Wall Paint as supplied. There is no recoat window after the first coat has dried.
Cutting in
Cut in small areas only — no more than can be painted before the cut-in paint dries completely, usually no more than one hour. Each layer of mineral paint is high build, and rolling wall paint over dried cut-in paint can lead to flashing, especially in darker colors. The double layer of paint and the difference in texture both contribute to flashing potential. Rolling into damp cut-in minimizes it.
Drying times
Drying times are dependent on temperature, humidity, and coverage.
- Touch: 2–4 hours
- Recoat: 4–6 hours
Tools
| Tool | Application |
|---|---|
| Brush | Nylon / polyester brush |
| Roller cover | 3/8" to 3/4" nap synthetic roller cover |
| Airless spray | Pressure 2000 psi. Tip .025 in minimum. |
Touch-Ups
Use the same batch of paint and the same method of application for touch-up. For best results, dampen the area immediately around the touch-up spot — this helps avoid a dry edge, which can be visible in glancing light. Thin the paint 10% and apply as sparingly as possible, feathering the touched-up paint out and away from the damaged area.
Cleaning
Clean spills, spatters, hands, and tools immediately after use with soap and warm water. After cleaning, flush spray equipment with a compliant cleanup solvent to prevent rusting of the equipment. Tools should be kept in the paint material or in water during work breaks.
Storage, Handling & Disposal
- Approximately 12 months in a tightly closed container under cool, frost-free conditions.
- Protect from freezing, heat, and direct sunlight.
- Keep the container closed when not in use.
- Dispose of completely emptied containers in accordance with local, state, and federal waste regulations.
- Do not pour into drains, waterways, or ground.
