Product Overview
Lime Slurry is a mineral filling aggregate for JH Lime Wall Paint, used when a thicker consistency is desired for application by roller, trowel, or brush. It contains compatible silicates of different grain shape and size in a well-balanced composition, graded to work with the lime binder rather than sit in it.
Added to Lime Wall Paint, it builds body. That body does two things: it evens out or hides differences in the texture of the substrate beneath, and it lets the applicator build deliberate decorative texture on the surface. Interior or exterior.
The Finish
Because the aggregate is mineral and graded to the lime, the finished surface stays a lime surface — it carbonates, bonds into the substrate, and keeps the matte mineral character of Lime Wall Paint. What changes is depth. The added body holds a trowel mark, a squeegee pull, or a brush drag that thinner material would level out.

† The dry powder contains less than 1.5% respirable crystalline quartz. Mixed into Lime Wall Paint and applied wet, no respirable dust is generated. Dust is a hazard when handling the dry powder and when sanding or abrading a cured surface.

Finishes
Three finishes are built with Lime Slurry. They differ in ratio, tool, and how the surface is worked while it is still open.
| Finish | Ratio | Tool | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone | 1 part slurry : 2 parts paint | Lime Wall Trowel | Troweled flat and burnished. Reads like honed limestone. |
| Linear | 1:2 to 1:1 | Roller or block brush, then Lime Slurry Smoothing Squeegee or broom | Rolled or brushed, then pulled through in one direction while the surface is still open. Directional, combed movement. |
| Rockface | 1:1 | Lime Wall Trowel | Equal parts slurry and Lime Wall Paint, laid on thick and left unsmoothed. Heavy, quarried relief. |
Suitable Substrates
Lime Slurry follows the substrate rules of the Lime Wall Paint it is mixed into.
Interior
- Drywall (requires JH Mineral Prime)
- Plaster and lime plaster
- Masonry, brick, and block
- Concrete
- Natural stone
- Previously painted surfaces (requires JH Mineral Prime)
Exterior
- Unpainted stucco
- Brick and masonry
- Natural stone
- Concrete
- Plaster and render
- Painted vertical surfaces (requires JH Mineral Prime)
Not suitable for
Floors and shower walls.

Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be sound, dry, absorbent, clean, and free from dust and grease. Loose paint, dirt, oily residue, mold, and mildew must be completely removed before application. Complete the painting of all adjacent surfaces and joinery first.
Prime new drywall with two coats of JH Mineral Prime and previously painted surfaces with one coat. Mineral Prime is touch dry in 2–4 hours and can be recoated after 4–6 hours. Priming the full surface — never spot-priming — is what gives consistent absorption under a textured lime finish.
Mixing
Start at 2 parts Lime Wall Paint to 1 part Lime Slurry. Increase the slurry proportion for heavier texture. Do not add more slurry than the Lime Wall Paint can absorb.
Mix with a drill and paddle attachment until the material is smooth and homogeneous, with no dry pockets and no streaks of color. If the mixture becomes too thick, add small amounts of water.
Mix the full project quantity at one time and box it together. Ratio drives the texture, so a batch mixed at a different ratio will not match one already on the wall.
Application
Apply only when air, substrate, and material are above freezing and below 100°F. Do not apply in direct sun or freezing conditions. Two coats.
First coat
- Confirm the material is mixed smooth and homogeneous before starting.
- Apply by roller, trowel, or block brush according to the finish being built.
- While the coat is still open, work the surface with the tool for that finish — trowel and burnish for Stone, pull through in one direction for Linear, leave unsmoothed for Rockface.
- Maintain a wet edge. Stop only at corners or natural breaks — never mid-wall.
- Cut in as you go rather than cutting in ahead as with conventional paint.
Second coat
- Allow 6–8 hours minimum; overnight is recommended.
- Apply and work the second coat using the same technique and the same ratio as the first.
- Do not return to rework areas that have begun to dry — this produces visible flashing.
Optional finishing coat
A thinned coat of Lime Wall Paint, brushed over the cured texture, adds depth and tonal movement across the relief. Use the same color, or a related one for a tone-on-tone effect.
Tools
| Tool | Application |
|---|---|
| JH Lime Wall Trowel | Stone and Rockface. Lays the material on and, for Stone, burnishes it flat. |
| JH Lime Slurry Smoothing Squeegee | Linear. Pulls the open surface through in one direction. |
| Synthetic roller cover | 3/8"–1/2" nap. Lays on the first coat for Linear before it is pulled through. |
| JH Block Brush | Alternative lay-on for Linear, and for the optional thinned finishing coat. |
| Drill and paddle | Mixing. Required — slurry cannot be mixed in by hand. |
| Mist sprayer | Keeps the surface open in warm or dry conditions. |
Care & Maintenance
A slurry finish is cared for as a lime surface. Dust lightly with a dry, soft brush. Do not wipe across the surface, scrub, or use abrasive pads. Treat marks and scuffs by gently dabbing the isolated spot only.
For kitchens, bathroom walls excluding shower walls, hallways, stairwells, or any high-traffic interior zone, finish with JH Matte Sealer once the lime has fully cured at 7–10 days.
Touch-Ups
Texture is difficult to touch up invisibly, because a repair reproduces both color and relief. Isolate the affected area, rebuild the texture with material from the original batch at the original ratio, and feather the edges outward in all directions. Work to a natural break where possible. Contact JH technical support for guidance on larger repairs.
Batch, Storage & Handling
Order 15–20% overage and mix the full project quantity at one ratio. Color may vary between batches, and ratio varies the texture. These two steps are what keep a textured wall consistent and touch-ups seamless.
- Store sealed, upright, in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
- Protect from humidity and water. The powder must stay dry until it is mixed.
- Do not store near a heat source or in direct sunlight.
- Avoid dust formation and deposits when opening and decanting.
- Reseal the container immediately after use.

Safety
Lime Slurry is a dry powder containing less than 1.5% respirable crystalline quartz. Prolonged or repeated inhalation of respirable crystalline silica may cause damage to the lungs. Do not breathe dust.
- Wear a NIOSH-approved N95 or equivalent particulate respirator when handling the dry powder, and when sanding or abrading a cured surface.
- Avoid raising dust when opening, decanting, and mixing. Add the powder gradually and keep it below the rim of the pail.
- Use only in a well-ventilated area. Restricted to professional users.
- The mixed material is alkaline. Wear gloves, long sleeves, and sealed safety goggles.
- In the event of eye contact, rinse the open eye under running water for several minutes and seek medical attention.
- In the event of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
- Do not ingest. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and throat well with water, do not induce vomiting, and contact a physician immediately.
- Keep out of reach of children.
